A lone tree stands in the open prairie bent by the winds and the passage of time. It offers shelter and protection for all who seek it.

Wheeling, dancing and darting, these male red-winged blackbirds search for food in the golden grasses. This season's nests long empty, the males band together to protect their territory from northern migrants. The sun has begun to set. Bathing the grasses in warm glow.
"Wild River Ranch" was as much about the wildlife to me as the pristine Texas landscape. Not only did I observe blackbirds, but an armadillo, white-tailed deer, Axis deer and even long trails of leaf-cutter ants. Ample natural food and water sources allow for a sustainable diverse ecosystem on this property.
Growing up in North Texas, these lovely birds did not seem to be very common. I would excitedly point them out to my parents when I spotted the distinctive flash of red as we drove through more rural areas. For me, creating this painting combined nearly forgotten childhood memories and my current love for Texas grasses making it a pleasure to paint.
