In every housecat beats the heart of a wild beast. You can see the tiger's eyes shining through as this feline waits for her prey to pass within reach. A bug, a leaf or imaginary foe, she'll tackle it swiftly before ducking down in the grass to begin the game again.

Once upon a time they were kept by the pharaohs of Egypt. Also depicted in their art, this ancient breed, which lies somewhere between ducks and geese, has a unique beauty that is undeniable. The were imported to England in the 1700's and no one seems to be quite sure how they ended up in the US (most likely imported as ornamentals for pond settings) but small pockets of them are living in Texas for sure and right on my lake.

Massive spiraling horns on this Aoudad Ram give it an unmistakeable majesty. A native of North Africa, they have made themselves quite at home in the West Texas desert. This one, though, is a resident of Fossil Rim Wildlife Park and will greet you, hoping for a snack, as you drive by.

The zebra holds a special place in my heart. It is the mascot of those with rare illnesses–the medical zebras of the world. I recently illustrated a children's book for the Immune Deficiency Foundation and photographed the zebras at Fossil Rim Wildlife Park in Glen Rose, Texas. This painting was done using some of that source material as reference.

I have the pleasure of living on the water and watching our resident Canada Geese year-round. Each Spring we look forward to new goslings obediently following their parents traversing the water in their a neat rows. Such a joy to watch. They always bring a smile to my face.

Who says it's a "bird" feeder? This little guy has no reservations dining for one at this prime location. Although I intended to feed the birds around my home, I ended up watching the quirky antics of three squirrels who quickly found, emptied and even disassembled a bird feeder. Might as well make the best of it, so this guy ended up in a painting.

Rebecca Zook Accepted for "Art and Conservation: Our Hidden Treasures" Show

I'm really excited. I found out about an art show that combines my love of art with that of the environment. Specifically Texas Landscapes. You could only submit one piece on order to be considered for this project which was juried by a committee of 3 people, so I submitted "Calm" shown here. I found out today I was one of the chosen artists.

This show is put on by the "Hill Country Council for the Arts." Each artist will be paired with a private landowner in the Texas Hill Country and will be given 4 opportunities, one in each season, to visit the property to find inspiration for painting. This is pure landscape. They ask that we avoid any manmade structures in our pieces. I haven't received my landowner pairing yet, but can't wait to find out! The work will be exhibited at the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm and possibly a second location in April 2015. Prizes will be awarded and all pieces will be for sale of course.

This is their synopsis of the show.
"Art and Conservation: Our Hidden Treasures began in 2007 as a collaboration between the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm and the Hill Country Council for the Arts. Some of the astonishingly beautiful and unique “Hidden Treasures” of the Texas Hill Country are hidden away on private property. Others are often overlooked as we pursue our busy lives. Art and Conservation promotes works of art that focus on these local natural resources by giving artists special access to private land and encouraging work inspired by local public lands, such as parks and along Texas back roads."

Boy of Many Faces Series by Fine Artist Rebecca Zook

"Exuberant", "Impatient" and "Bored" can now be viewed and purchased through "Your Private Collection Art Gallery" on the Granbury Historic Square. I encountered this young boy while at a Dickens-themed festival as I was waiting for a parade to begin. His antics were so amusing that I couldn't help but turn my camera on him and snap away. Capturing his expressions in paint from those source photos was a project I enjoyed immensely.

"Maya's Perfect Pick" by Rebecca Zook

Featured Painting...

It's still going to be a while before the peaches around here are ready. Really hoping the weather cooperates this year. The local orchard didn't have any last year. My apricot tree is loaded with fruit this year...watching it closely. The squirrels and I have a battle over them, so I have to watch carefully for when they decided the fruit is edible or I'm out-of-luck. In the meantime, here's a painting of my niece picking fruit in an orchard.

It seems nearly impossible these days to view a landscape without power lines, oil and gas rigs or something else man-made interfering with the landscape. Instead of omitting these for a painting, I made them the subject.

Commonly called "Blanket Flowers" or "Indian Blankets" these say Texas to me more than the bluebonnets. Though beautiful, bluebonnets are short-lived and a bit finicky; needing a certain level of rainfall to be at their best. Blanket flowers appear after the bluebonnets and revel in the blistering Texas summer sun. They represent the hardiness of true Texans to me as they cover the rolling hills forming a blanket across the land.

Work in Progress…progressing

Plodding along on this. Finally starting to feel more normal post surgery. Hope to finish this up soon since I'm about to start a series of 3 portraits that were commissioned and a huge commissioned project...that is going to kill me not to be able to share for months to come.

Work in Progress

This is what's currently in progress in the studio. Still working sky and rear tree line. Silly me thought I'd be able to get this done while I was home post surgery. Surgery took a bit more out of me than planned.

This is acrylic on masonite. 20" x 24"

It Depends on Your Perspective

This is my cat Mouse, being Mouse. Upside-down is his favorite position and he's just about to reach out and grab me. "Stop and smell the roses Mama or better yet, stop and pet the kitty." Sometimes life needs a little change in perspective.
