Earth & Sky

The Dance

Acrylic on Panel | 36” x 24”
Framed: $2,950
A chance encounter. Wind and cloud dance with wild abandon. Twisting, twirling, entwined so completely they become one. Unrestrained passion propels them forward until spent. Only then do they separate; fading from view as night descends.

Burn from Within

Acrylic on Panel | 36” x 24”
Framed: $2,950
Some people keep their emotions hidden. Their hopes, desires and needs pushed to the side to focus on others. There may be nobility in this, but the dreams do not die. They continue to burn from within. The beauty of their life’s potential still exists. If nourished, those buried dreams will begin to glow. They grow to fill a void spilling light upon the landscape touching everyone around them. There is still time. It’s never too late as long as an ember still shines.

Golden Hour

Acrylic on Panel | 12” x 12”
Unframed: $449 | Framed: $569
I’m sure you’ve experienced it. The moment when the light around you takes on a mystical, golden glow and you feel transported to another time and place. Objects seem softer, dreamlike. Just for a moment you can set aside harsh realities and imagine that magic truly does exist in the world.

Acrylic on Panel | 24” x 16”

Wind Dancing

Acrylic on Panel | 14.25” x 10.5”
Unframed: $649 | Framed: $710
Watching the wind weave patterns through the grasses, I stand among them and am reminded of the ocean. Great waves roll across the fields. Seed heads catch the sun and glow like breaking spray. I wish I could capture sound in my paintings. The rustling of the seed pods as they dance in the wind says “Fall is near” to my ears.

Spring Blanket

Acrylic on Panel | 18” x 24”
Unframed: $2,495 | Framed: $2,575
Commonly called “Blanket Flowers” or “Indian Blankets” (Gaillardia pulchella) these say Texas to me more than the bluebonnets. Though beautiful, bluebonnets are short-lived and a bit finicky; needing a certain level of rainfall to be at their best. Blanket flowers appear after the bluebonnets and revel in the blistering Texas summer sun. They represent the hardiness of true Texans to me as they cover the rolling hills forming a blanket across the land.

Spellbound

Acrylic on Panel | 20” x 16”
Unframed: $865 | Framed: $1,025
Sublime beauty. A moment frozen in memory. A waking dream that causes us to pause, to marvel and to forget, for that moment at least, the harshness and pain that walks with us. Reminds us that this beauty always surrounds us. We are sometimes blind to it, but it is always there. Waiting to be rediscovered and lead us out of the shadows and into the light of a new dawn.

Solitary Cloud

Acrylic on Panel | 20” x 16”
Unframed: $865 | Framed: $1,025
I call this my “cloud portrait”. Capturing the essence of one lone cloud. This is misleading, though. I’m only describing a single moment in time. A cloud is in a constant state of flux. Changing in form and often color from one moment to the next right in front of us. Change is the true essence of a cloud.

Smoldering

Acrylic on Panel | 8” x 8”
Unframed: $325 | Framed: $375
In the final moments before night settles in, the last of the sunlight sits on the horizon quietly smoldering. Lingering. Unyielding to the weight of the deep blue that seeks to subdue it.

New Beginnings

Acrylic on Panel | 8” x 8”
Unframed: $325 | Framed: $375
Stagnation is the antithesis of life. The one thing we can count on is change. Often life forces change upon us and we struggle against it, resist it, push back, cry out that life is unfair, but that doesn’t alter anything. Change wins and once embraced can offer something new, something better or at least a deeper understanding of one’s self.

Lazy Day

Acrylic on Panel | 16” x 12”
Unframed: $865 | Framed: $985
In the last days of Summer, the heat and humidity still hang in the air, but the evenings are beginning to show telltale signs that Fall will come. I love the transitions between seasons. The push and pull. The struggle. We are teased, thinking Fall is here only to have Summer take hold again demanding our attention like a child refusing sleep. Eventually, she will tire and relent. Me, I chose to sit quietly and admire her handiwork before it is transformed. Lazy days in nature are good for the soul.

Autumn Glow

Acrylic on Panel | 10” x 8”
Unframed: $375 | Framed: $439
Late afternoon light falls across a wild meadow. Most of the grasses have turned golden and gone to seed. A smattering of vines mixed in have begun to turn yellow and red giving the scene the look of abstract art.

Wildness By The Water

Acrylic on Panel | 7.25” x 11”
Unframed: $375 | Framed: $439
On the edge of the lake, wildness has staked a claim. Though boxed in by homes and traditional well groomed lawns, even a small piece of the native landscape can provide homes and protection for animal and insect life. Here is where I listen to the frogs, watch the dragonflies and where the fireflies escape the heat of day to await the dusk.

Overhead

Acrylic on Panel | 6” x 6”
Unframed: $200 | Framed: $249
Lying on the warm, soft grass studying the sky, I feel the Earth beneath me, though I see only sky. I see the clouds, but cannot touch them. Yet, I am connected to both as the rest of the world around me fades from thought.

Rain Bringer

Acrylic on Panel | 6” x 6”

1 AM

Acrylic on Watercolor Board | 11” x 17”
Unframed: $849 | Framed: $939
When we find sleep eluding us and those fence jumping sheep scurrying away over a hill, we lay there, hyper-aware of each tick of the clock and dread how lack of sleep will ruin the coming day. While I lay there on one of those sleepless nights, I glanced out the window as a cold front was moving in. The full moon lit up the waves of clouds. Each one “crashed” over it then rolled by revealing a deep blue field dotted with stars before the next wave. It was beautiful. I went outside and felt the brisk wind and watched the clouds. I went back for the camera to capture the scene with the intention of creating this painting and thankful that I was one of few people awake to witness the beauty of nature at 1AM.

Hope Burns Bright

Acrylic on Panel | 6” x 6”
Unframed: $200 | Framed: $249
Each of us carries a burden and only rarely is it visible to the people around us. At times you may not have been able to see past it. Hope carries us through these dark points in our lives and can take nearly any form. Maybe it’s a single kind act of a stranger, perhaps a friend or family member that believes in you. You might draw strength from your religion or a silent walk in the woods. No matter the origin, hope is a shining light that burns through the darkness illuminating life’s possibilities.

Evening Light

Acrylic on Panel | 18” x 24”
Unframed: $2,495 | Framed: $2,575
Backlit drama. These young trees take center stage in the grassy field. Their long shadows shifting with the movement of the sun. Their leaves rippling in the breeze. The vibrant greens and the quality of the light are what drew me to paint this scene.

Comanche Grass I

Acrylic on Panel | 8” x 10.5
Unframed: $375 | Framed: $439
Dominating the local landscape and privately owned, Comanche Peak in Granbury is only accessible for a few special events. I’ve been fortunate to have been able to attend some over the years. This is one of several paintings I created from photographs I shot on top of the plateau. The native grasses blow in the warm breeze.

The Ephemeral Stream

Acrylic on Panel | 20” x 24”
Unframed: $2,650 | Framed: $2,749
The storm has just passed. Dry only moments before, this stream now flows bringing life to the surrounding landscape and drink to the creatures who live here. It will soon be dry again unless the rains continue. Many people see lakes and rivers as our main source of water, but transient waterways are an important part of the ecological system and to us. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 11.5 million people in Texas get a portion of their water from intermittent, ephemeral or headwater streams.

Texas Textures

Acrylic on Panel | 16” x 12”
Unframed: $865 | Framed: $985
This gently rolling hillside scene displays so many of the textures that I have come to love about the landscape in my part of Texas; the wild grasses, the cedar trees, various vines clambering up old barbed wire fencing. Yes, mountains have their majesty, but beauty and complexity surrounds us in all natural spaces vast or small if you allow yourself to see and appreciate them.

Sky Waves
Acrylic on Panel | 48” x 16”
Unframed: $2,749 | Framed: $2,875
So much of nature mirrors itself in seemingly disparate elements. The spiral of a seashell matches the coil of a hurricane. Here the form of the clouds felt like a great wave in slow motion crashing into the sky.

Smoke Signals

Acrylic on Panel | 12” x 12”
Unframed: $449 | Framed: $580
Reaching toward the night, the coal black cloud swirls from the fire of the setting sun. Heavy with the burdens of mankind, it gathers their whispers in the dark; their pleas in the night. Wrapping fears in billowed tranquility to bring peaceful sleep to those who dream below and who will now awake with new hope.

Blue Beyond the Clouds

Acrylic on Panel | 10” x 8”
Unframed: $349 | Framed: $429
The sky is still blue even when you can’t see it. To me, this painting is a reminder that no matter what challenges we face in our day-to-day lives that may lead us to believe that nothing will ever improve, the reality is that if we hang on, happiness and joy will return–as long as we choose to see it.

Last Glow

Acrylic on Panel | 8”x10.5”
Unframed: $349 | Framed: $429
This glowing thunderhead could only be glimpsed through a break in the much darker, thick foreground clouds. The scene was surreal as I stood on my back deck watching. The colors vivid and running the entire spectrum.

Lifting Fog

Acrylic on Panel | 8.5” x 9.25”
Unframed: $375| Framed: $439
At certain times a year, the fog comes. I welcome it. Rising from the water behind my home, it shrouds the surrounding landscape. As it lifts, objects are revealed in layers. Each layer taking center stage with little distraction behind.

Boulders worn smooth by the power of water and passage of time. Roots searching, crawling over any obstacle to reach nourishment and provide stability for the determined tree. An oasis in the middle of the desert. You’d never know bare looming red rock towers just above the treeline. Sedona, Arizona.

Season’s Turn

Acrylic on Watercolor Board | 17” x 11”
Unframed: $849 | Framed: $939
After a brutal Texas summer, we long for the first signs of Autumn. A shift in the wind carries the first hint of cooler weather and the leaves begin their dynamic change from deep greens to fiery yellows, oranges and reds. This painting of “Wild River Ranch” captures that time between the seasons. Summer is still present but losing its hold. Nature forever marches forward, but advances only in a circle. Summer will reign again, but for now, I and the wild Axis deer will enjoy the promise of cooler days.

High Tide Morning

Acrylic on Panel | 36” x 24”
Unframed: $2,850 | Framed: $3,025
The first light of day skims over the water. You feel the roar of the ocean. The scent of salt awakes your mind. Never-ending waves wash over the rocks then recede, leaving swirling, foamy trails in their wake before advancing again. You have been captured by the sea.

Dividing The Sky

Acrylic on Panel | 16” x 24”
Unframed: $1,995 | Framed: $2,249
A truly wild landscape is difficult to come by. We are surrounded by the infrastructure that makes our daily lives easier. We become so used to its presence that it falls out of our perception, but if you focus your attention on the sky, you can’t ignore the cross-crossing lines that divide it.

The Wishing Sky

Acrylic on Panel | 6” x 6”
Unframed: $200 | Framed: $249
Even at this early hour, the air is thick with humidity. The view reminiscent of an old oil lamp. The lake surface is oil, the rising sun is the burning wick and yellow swooshes of clouds are bright flame. Maybe I’ll be granted three wishes if I can summon the lamp’s genie.

Sizzle

Acrylic on Panel | 6” x 6”

Illusion

Acrylic on Panel | 8” x 8”
Unframed: $325 | Framed: $375
Seeing the suns rays reminds me of the way we are taught to draw the sun as children. I say taught because I can remember seeing in coloring books and in friend’s drawings distinct rays emanating from a circle and me asking why they drew it like that. It didn’t look like the sun to me. Crepuscular rays they are called. I think they deserve a more elegant sounding name. A lesson in perspective. In reality, the rays are near parallel. What we see is an illusion.

Blackbird Fly Into the Light

Acrylic on Panel | 11” x 17”
Framed: $849
Wheeling, dancing and darting, these male red-winged blackbirds search for food in the golden grasses. This season’s nests long empty, the males band together to protect their territory from northern migrants. The sun has begun to set bathing the grasses in a warm glow. As a child, I would excitedly point out the blackbirds to my parents when I spotted the distinctive flash of red as we drove through rural areas. Creating this painting brought forth nearly forgotten childhood memories.

Veil On a New Dawn

Acrylic on Watercolor Board | 20" x 16"
Framed: $895
I’m not certain what it is about low lying fog, but I get almost giddy when I see it for the first time every year. Perhaps it’s the magical quality it imparts to the landscape. The fog transforms as it cloaks giving an entirely new feel to a familiar setting. The pinks and oranges of the dawn simply added to the magic.

Palo Pinto Prickly Pear

Acrylic on Panel | 24" x 36"

Framed: $2,950
Giant fields of prickly pear cactus, undisturbed. This is a scene from the future Palo Pinto Mountain State Park in Strawn, Texas. Part of my husband’s Master’s thesis project was completed here and I went out with his team one weekend. I feel very fortunate to have been able to visit before road construction or any real amenities have been added. I saw the landscape in a near pristine natural state.
